Your Pooch Needs to Know these Commands
Most pet owners will agree that dogs are like children. As with our children, we expect good behavior and so, too, should we expect the same of our furry friends.
Training should begin immediately so that your puppy knows who’s in charge and expectations are made clear from the very beginning. When teaching your dog commands, it should always be done in a quiet place, with little to no distractions and a large supply of dog treats on hand to praise your dog for a job well done.
When teaching your puppy commands, the tone of your voice is extremely important and must always match the command. The inflection in your voice will let your dog know whether he’s doing something naughty or something good. Here is a list of the top five commands every dog owner should teach their pooch:
1. NO – Saying, “no!”, in a firm voice lets your dog know that he should not continue exhibiting the unwanted behavior. This simple, one syllable command is easy and clear for puppies to understand and could perhaps be accompanied with a light tap to the rump or snout with a newspaper for emphasis.
2. SIT- Using a stern voice with this command will ensure your dog knows you mean business. Press lightly – but firmly – on the dog’s backside as you say the command. Praise your dog with a happy, excited voice and a dog treat when the command is executed correctly.
3. COME- Continue to use simple, one syllable commands to train your dog. Use this command when your puppy begins to wander from your side. Once your puppy has gone further away from you than you’d like, say, “come!”, and motion for the dog to come towards you. As always, be certain to praise your puppy with lots of love and treats.
4. KENNEL- This is a unique command in that it works well when house training your puppy. Additionally, as your puppy matures, you can still use this command to have your dog go to his kennel for sleep, for misbehavior or if you simply don’t want your dog roaming the house when you’re not there. Use a friendly and firm tone with this word to encourage the dog to go inside his kennel. Your puppy’s kennel should be treated as its home.
5. STAY- Most puppies will likely run after a passing car, a squirrel or even worse…a stranger! This command should be used in conjunction with a short leash. Stand out in an open area and when your puppy tries to run off, firmly say, “stay!”, and give a gentle tug on the leash. Your voice and your puppy’s inability to move will ensure that with the sound of one command, your dog will not leave your side.
Good behavior in puppies starts with the training they receive from their masters. Through repetition, praise and scolding when necessary, your puppy is certain to grow up to be a well-mannered friend for life.
